Care and Training of Pets

Congratulations! You've decided to get a new pet.
Dogs and cats can be very exciting, but there are a few things you should know to keep your new friend happy.

The first thing to do is make sure your house is well equipped for your new pet. Here is a list of some things you might need to keep your new pet happy.

For Cats

  • Food Bowl
  • Litter Box
  • Scratching Post
  • Play Gym (Optional)
  • Pet Statues (Optional)
For Dogs
  • Dog House or Pet Bed
  • Food Bowl
  • Dog Bath
  • Play Gym (Optional)
  • Pet Statues (Optional)

Here is a list of all available interactions and a short explanation of what they do. Some of these require you to have a high relationship with your animal for them to become available.

Get back in your carrier makes your pet return to it's carrier for safe keeping and storage.

Pet is the action to stroke your animal.

Change Name is used to change your pet's name.

Praise should be used when your pet has done something that was good.

Scold tells the animal what they just did was wrong.

Call Over will make your pet come to where you are standing.

Sit-n-Stay (Dogs Only) is used for training your pet to obey the attack command.

Attack... (Dogs Only) is used when you want your animal to attack someone on the property.

Wrestle (Dogs Only) is the interaction to rough-house with your dog.

Shoo (Cats Only) tells your cat to go away.

Hunt Mice (Cats Only) tells your pet to get rid of pesky rodents around your house.

Animals love attention. If you have more than one dog or cat in the house they will usually play with each other. If you don't have a second animal you will need to play with your dog or cat often to keep its social up. Playing with pets will also make your social go up if you are low. Pets don't always get along and they might break into a fight with other animals. Some pets are naturally mean and will bite you if you try to pet them. Changing their ways is not possible.

Your new pet will need some food before too long. Simply click Fill Bowl on the pet food bowl and you will be charged §15 to fill it. You may also want to invest in a crafted pet feeder. The food in the pet feeder never goes stale, only needs filling occasionally. and costs §150 to fill. When your animal gets hungry, it will automatically go and eat. Both dogs and cats can eat out of any bowl, but they will not eat your sim's leftover food.

After eating, your pet may need to relieve itself. Cats will use a litter box if one is available, but you will need to clean it after a few uses. Just click on the litter box and select Clean. Dogs however, will not use the litter box and will more likely soak your new carpet. After a dog has done its business, you will need to clean up the mess and give it a bath to raise hygiene. Just use the dog bath and you will wash, dry, and brush your dog clean again.

Your pet will eventually get tired and will need a rest. Make sure they are in a quiet place and have a comfortable bed to rest in. Both cats and dogs can use the bed pad but only dogs can use the dog house. There are many varieties of pet beds and houses. Choose the one you like best. Your new pet will love it.

You may wish to train your dog to obey the attack command. Using this command will make your dog attack any selected visitor on your lot. Training takes quite a while and your dog must be happy and have its needs met before you begin training. To start the attack training, use the Sit-n-Stay interaction and a bar will appear above your dog's head. Slowly, this bar will rise and when it gets to the very top it will disappear, this means the training is complete. It will take many training sessions before your dog is completely trained and it will need to replenish its needs after a few sessions.

Cats come in handy around the house because they can eliminate mice! Use the Hunt Mice interaction and your cat will try to remove the mice from the property. Sometimes they will not be successful. Keep trying and your cat will become more skilled.

Following these guidelines will ensure a happy and healthy relationship between you and your new pet; however, if you don't take care of your pet it will run away and be gone forever. Before you go offline, you may wish to put your pet back in its carrier for safe keeping. Remember, only the owner can release the pet from its carrier. When animals are in their carriers they cannot run away but they retain their relationship with you. Give it the attention it deserves and enjoy your new companion!
